The human resource development (HRD) ministry is focusing on two schemes: total rural literacy and social security for the poor.
HRD minister Smriti Irani said the ministry will try to achieve 100 percent literacy in all villages under the Sansad Adarsh Gram Yojana. Modi has urged members of Parliament (MPs) to adopt a village panchayat each under the scheme and develop them by 2019, with at least one village showcased as a model village by the end of 2016.
“We will make such villages 100 percent literate by March 2016,” Irani said, adding that her ministry has written to MPs for suggestions. She said villages in 410 districts have been identified under the scheme.
In the past five years, more than 36 million people have become neo-literate through the Shakshar Bharat Scheme, largely in rural India, and the ministry believes they and their families can benefit from the social security schemes.
