Karnataka to build 5-lakh tonne warehouse capacity

The Karnataka government is planning to build 5-lakh tonne capacity warehousing at an estimated cost of Rs. 1,700 crore.

The state’s Minister of State for Agriculture Krishna Byre Gowda said, “This will serve two purposes, increase warehousing capacity and help farmers store their produce for higher realisation later.” Currently, the State has a combined 30 lakh tonnes warehouse capacity for all crops

Gowda remarked that his department is preparing a budget for ₹1,700 crore to create crop specific, region specific warehousing space with the help of National Bank for Agriculture and Rural Development. He also maintained that the department will create the capacity within a time-frame of one to two years.

Once built, the warehouses will be assisted and managed by the Co-operation Department. The government is in the process of identifying available land.
