ICAR’s first tableau on integrated farming at Republic Day Parade

For the first time, Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) is participating in the Republic Day parade, showcasing integrated farming system, ‘Mishrit kheti, Khushiyon ki kheti’. The integrated farming system for doubling farm income, will be the theme of the official ICAR tableau for the Republic Day Parade in New Delhi on January 26.

In the front part of the tableau, the scientists developing technologies based on farmers’ needs to ensure higher income and to support climate friendly agriculture will be shown. This system, advocates organic based cropping system, which is highly appropriate for Eastern India. In central part, the happiness of farmers has been shown. Finally the farmers’ hard work throughout the year bears fruit. They express their happiness through celebration with folk songs and dance at community level. To commemorate successful season, farmers and farm women are expressing their happiness through Bihu dance.

The rear part of tableau will shows animal husbandry complementing crop production and supplementing human food since evolution of agriculture and human civilisation. Therefore, livestock remains integral part of IFS. The farmers are getting benefited by the use of new modern information and technologies and information through mobile and various applications.

The tableau of ICAR at the Republic Day-2018 parade will exhibit integrated farming system which is a judicious mix of two or more agri-enterprise system for minimum resource competition and maximum complementary so as to support eco-friendly production, enhance employment, income and enrich family nutrition.

The crop and livestock – cow, buffalo, goat, sheep, poultry, pig, among other cattle – based farming system is popular in the country as it is being practiced by 86 percent of farmers. Integrated farming system model comprises cropping systems, orchards, dairy, poultry, piggery, and aquaculture, which are selected on the basis of regions, land holdings, availability of labour, and available capital for investment. The system is ideal means for small and marginal farmers for enhancing; agriculture for quality food, nutrition and climate resilient farming system besides doubling of farm income.

There will be a total of 23 tableaux in the parade, fourteen states and union territories and nine central ministries will participate in the Republic Day Parade this year.
