To recognise the outstanding achievements of scientists, who have provided a major breakthrough in the field of agriculture, Indian Council for Agricultural Research has constituted Norman Borlaug Awards.

According to ICAR, we have invited nominations for the awards from the scientists of any discipline of agricultural and allied sciences. The nominations will be accepted from outside of National Agricultural Research System (NARS), whose research work has displayed a rare quality of original thinking and path-breaking output. The award is open to all agricultural scientists working in India.

The award will carry a cash prize of Rs 10 lakh. Apart from this, the selected scientist will be given a research contingency grant of Rs 30 lakh per year for carrying out research in an area identified mutually by the scientist and ICAR, which will have specified objectives and goals. Grant would be admissible for a maximum of five years, subject to annual review and favourable recommendations by a committee of agricultural and non-agricultural scientists set up for the project.

ICAR further states, the awardee should have sufficient and reasonable period of service left at the time of award, only then he or she could be granted a project as per existing terms and conditions of this award which involves research contingency grant for a period of five years. The applicant for this award should necessarily be nominated by the presidents of science academies or vice chancellors of agricultural universities or directors of institutes.
