In order to form a scientific and technical partnership on maize and wheat research, Indian Council of (ICAR) and Department of Agricultural Research and Education (DARE) signed a work plan for the period of 2018-22, with Mexico based The International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center (CIMMYT), during Borlaug Institute for South Asia (BISA) 9th executive committee meeting, recently held at National Agricultural Science Complex in New Delhi.
The work plan was signed by Dr. Trilochan Mohapatra, Secretary (DARE) & Director General ,ICAR and Martin Kropff, Director General, CIMMYT in the presence of all Ex-Co members and other senior officials. It has been developed to promote and accelerate close collaborative efforts in the field of maize and wheat systems.
The proposed work plan will provide a platform for a series of formal collaborations which will be mutually beneficial and will strengthen research efforts of both organisations in various areas including the development, delivery of stress resilient and nutritionally enriched wheat and maize germplasm. Impact oriented sustainable and climate smart agricultural practices required in India, socio-economic analyses and the development of policy recommendations. It will also enable to organise training courses and capacity building on identified areas for benefitting researchers, technicians, students and other stakeholders in South Asia in general and India in particular, through synergistic use of the facilities and expertise of ICAR and CIMMYT. Under the work plan, linkages will also be made with other international research centers and national institutions, especially in Asia, collaborating with ICAR and CIMMYT on maize and wheat.
