The decks have been cleared for upgrading Rajendra Agricultural University, Pusa, as a central agricultural university by signing a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between Government of Bihar and Indian Council for Agricultural Research (ICAR).
The MoU was signed in a function in Patna in the presence of Union Agriculture Minister Radha Mohan Singh and Bihar Chief Minister Jitan Ram Manjhi. The MoU will pave the way to table the Rajendra Central Agricultural University Bill in the Parliament. It will also make the university eligible to get Rs 400 crore allocated in the 12th five year plan. The erstwhile Planning Commission had proposed a central agricultural university in Bihar in 2009.
Expressing his happiness on the occasion, the union minister said, “A full-fledged central agricultural university was a long- pending demand of the State and it will prove to be a blessing for the farmers and people. It will lead to prosperity in the lives of small and poor cultivators. I will ask ICAR officials to expedite the work to establish the university.” The minister pointed out that agricultural productivity of Bihar was the highest in pre-Independence era and the new university would help in reclaiming the State’s lost glory.
