Aslam Mirza, 35, from Saharanpur in western Uttar Pradesh makes products carved from wood, representing his district in One District One Product (ODOP) pavilion in the Prayagraj Kumbh Mela. His products carved out of wood pulls the eye-balls of the visitors in the mela.
Beautifully carved and made from wood, dining table set, costing Rs 50,000 and sofa set, costing Rs 60,000 which give royal look and feel, have created special attraction among the visitors. Aslam’s products are ranging from dining table set, sofa set, centre table, wall clocks, chairs, tables, flowerpots, lamps and many other home décor products are beautifully crafted to decorate the drawing room and a place where a person wants to spend his leisure time with peace.
The woodcraft products’ price is ranging from Rs 1000 to Rs 60,000. However, sales of low cost products are higher than the products which cost higher.
He set an example of self-employment 20 years ago at his home, providing livelihoods to a dozen artisans and other related craftsmen from the surrounding areas. His products have become a household name in his nearby areas. He gives major focus on participating in exhibitions and fairs to reach to the maximum number of customers. On the other hand, if gets orders, he provides home delivery of the goods too.
He is currently planning to shift his manufacturing unit to a larger space to increase the productivity. While running his own unit he also promotes self-employment among the youth in his neighbouring areas by facilitating bank financing.
Employment has been a big challenge in the India where 65 per cent of its population is below 35 years. In this scenario, people like Aslam are setting examples of self-employment. These types of cottage industries are needed to be promoted by the governments which can engage maximum number of population.
