President Pranab Mukharjee has given his assent for upgrading the Rajendra Agriculture University, Pusa, Bihar into a central university on Wednesday. The both houses of Parliament had cleared the Dr. Rajendra Prasad Central Agriculture University Bill-2015 unanimously on the same day.
The step is considered to boost the agricultural research and education in the eastern states of India, further paving the way to bring the Second Green Revolution in the country.
Founded in 1970s, Rajendra Agricultural University is one of the largest agricultural universities in India. It would be the country’s second central agricultural university after Central Agricultural University, Imphal, Manipur. Now the university will be known as Dr. Rajendra Prasad Central Agriculture University.
After a long demand from Bihar, the erstwhile Planning Commission had proposed the varsity to be upgraded into central university in 2009 and had allocated Rs 400 crore in the 12 five year plan. Howerver, it was stuck in the political logjam for years.
Taking the issue forward, the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) and the Bihar Government had signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) in January 2015. It paved the way for upgrading the varsity.
