ISRO sets up Village Resource Centres for rural development

In order to demonstrate the potential of satellite technology for development of rural areas, Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) has established 473 Village Resource Centres (VRCs) on a pilot scale, in association with selected non-governmental organisations (NGOs), trusts and various departments of the state governments, Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) in the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER); MoS, PMO, Personnel, Public Grievances & Pensions, Atomic Energy, Dr Jitendra Singh informed Lok Sabha, the lower house of Indian Parliament today.

VRCs have provided various space technology enabled services such as tele-healthcare, tele-education, natural resources information, advisories related to agriculture, career guidance to rural students, skill development and vocational training among various other services.
The Centre has so far, spent around Rs 18 crores for establishing 473 VRCs.
