Rural Influencers E5: Reaching last mile with Post Offices

How many of you think that last mile delivery to the consumers in the far flung remote areas in India is still a big challenge for the marketers? Don’t worry, just remember, every problem has a solution. So, here is the great delivery network of India’s post offices, offering you delivery to the last mile.

Friends, I am Ajay Adlakha, Editor-in-Chief of Rural Marketing business portal, welcoming you to my new video. Here, I am on a mission to help businessmen and organisations to scale their businesses in rural India, by simplifying rural marketing strategies. In the last blog, as part of Rural Influencers series, you read on the role of Anganwadi workers in simplifying rural marketers.

Reaching last mile with Post Offices

Now, in order to simplify your rural marketing strategies, I am going to share a great network of 155,000 post offices, spread across the length and breadth of the country. Interestingly, out of these post offices, around 140,000 are located in the 640,000 village in India, providing last mile delivery to the remotest villages in India. Each post office in the rural areas cover around 4 to 5 villages, having strong connect with every household in the villages.

There is hardly anyone who is not aware of post offices. Traditionally, it has been a channel of delivery of mails, remittances through money orders and postal savings. However, with time, through technological interventions, the characteristics of post offices have changed in a big way. It is now providing logistics services to the e-commerce companies too, a big channel for marketers.

Moreover, it provides services like bill collection, sale of forms etc. Further, post office act as an agent for Government of India in discharging other services for citizens such as old age pension payments and disbursement of wages to the labours working under Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA).

Friends, considering its last mile reach and effectiveness, India Post has launched its own e-commerce portal while providing logistic services to other e-commerce companies. With over 19,000 PIN codes, post offices are divided into 23 postal circles.

The 6 digit PIN code is organised in the following way; first digit indicates the zone, first two digits indicate the sub-zone or postal circle, first three digits indicate a sorting district and last three digits indicate the delivery post office. There are 9 postal zones in India, including eight regional zones and one functional zone for the Indian Army.

Friends, in the form of 140,000 rural post offices, I have put a big channel of rural influencers in front of you which can be used in catering to the rural markets.
