Agriculture in India is the broadest economic contribution in GDP and plays a significant role in the overall socio-economic fabric of India. Since a lot of people are engaged in agriculture and with growing population, food production has to increase by 2020 by 50% to at least feed 18 million people. That’s exactly what we are going to discuss on what technologies should be put to use or have been innovated to keep the production level in check.

It’s very important for any farmer to know about the importance and the correct use of water, soil, nutrient management, and specific techniques and technologies to increase production.

Below we will have a look on how technology is advancing agriculture:

Starting from the time when people engaged in hunting and gathering to turning into farming and evolving from the use of stones and knives to coming of industrial revolution where people finally were introduced to the use of machinery.

Industrial revolution led to advancement in agricultural technology that greatly increased food production allowing large section of people to pursue other occupation.

Technology has extended the reach of agriculture to new mean’s, new place and new areas of economy. They not only simplify the work and effort but also save a lot of time. Less time with more output is always considered a win-win outcome.

Let’s get a detailed idea about the technologies which are present and how they are helping farmers.

  • Sensors: It is a fundamental addition to the automated farm, these sensors would help in real time understanding of the current situation of farms and water was scientifically founded in 2012 but was implemented around 2015. 
  • Crop sensors: These sensors would optimize the crop (high-resolution crop sensor) by informing the equipment about the correct amount of water and fertilizers required. Even drones can come handy as the sensors could be attached to the drones which would give a close insight of the condition of the crops.
  • High-flex tyres: farm equipment’s are getting larger so that the farmer can cover more area under less time and have getter productivity. But that would mean more pressure on the vehicle. for this to not happen they  came up with another technique i.e. the tyre makers are now developing new tyre technology to transfer the weight across the larger area. New tyre technologies include increased flexion because which the pressure would be on larger area and that would help not lead to soil compaction.
  • Fertilizer spreader: these are basically distributor vanes for obtaining maximum spreading of fertilizer with precision and uniformity.  It has a shield front plate to prevent spreading of material in front of spreader.
  • Terragator: It is also one of the spreader, fitted with low ground pressure .These special purpose machine are often customized for the specific application required by the applicator.


These were the equipment’s and technologies which are certainly prevailing in the market. Now let’s have look at the technologies which have a clear chance of developing in near future.


  • Agricultural robots: they are also known as agbots which are used for automate agricultural process such as harvesting, fruit picking ,soil maintenance ,ploughing, planting and irrigation.      
  • Precision agriculture: with satellite and advanced sensors, farmers can optimize returns on input by preserving resources at a very large gives a further understanding of crop, weather data and precision sensors have also improved planting technique.

Besides  technology, there are even more broader aspect where farmers,researchers,scientists and agronomists are gaining knowledge from wrokshops.Which is not only educating them about the field in but how better can they perform by gaining these knowledge from workshops. Especially executives and managers of the fertilizer would benefit the most of the workshops. Government official who are involved in developing strategies for advancement of agriculture production on a larger scale will also benefit from this.

Another factor which would boost agricultural is that rather than just concentrating on country’s food security we should also focus on farmer income security. Government should not only think of extracting benefits out of them but providing some benefits to them too. It’s a give and take relationship, greater the incentives more of quality production.

These technologies have not only broaden the agricultural sector but also have helped in decreasing labour activity but more of machinery activity which is leading to high scale growth and maximum outcome.
